London, UK will warm 500 homes in the Islington district with waste heat generated by the Underground subway system, a project that may be the first of its kind in Europe. “The heat will be captured from a London Underground vent at a Northern Line station, as well as from an electrical substation owned and operated by UK Power Networks,” Sustainable Homes explains. “The network has 1.4 miles of pipes which carry the heat to local housing and a leisure centre. Waste heat from London Underground will be captured and added to this network. This expansion of network will supply energy to at least a further 500 homes in the borough.” (h/t Kevin Cook/Newsana)
