Nevada’s largest utility, NV Energy, recently acquired by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, will shut down the 557-megawatt Reid Gardner plant near Las Vegas by 2017. The utility aims to end all its coal operations by 2019. The move is consistent with state legislation requiring the company to replace 800 MW of coal generation with renewables, and includes a 200-MW solar purchase from the nearby Moapa Band of Paiute reservation.
