Microgrid Knowledge describes the U.S. electric grid as “someone who can’t swim but lives on a boat.” A new report by the Union of Concerned Scientist examined power plants and substations near coasts to see how they would fare if sea level projections were true. Part of the problem is that a large share of the U.S. population, over one-third, live by the sea. By 2050, many coastal cities are likely to see daily high tides more than a foot above present levels, and greater storm surges, says the report. The report recommends several strategies to prepare for the possibility of flooding and severe storms like developing local energy, combined heat and power, and renewables plus storage.
