Brazil’s sugarcane industry is studying the potential to decarbonize Europe’s highway transport system through 2030 through policies like the European Commission Fuel Quality Directive (FQD).
A study for the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA) “shows that a higher FQD target to 2030 is achievable through reduction in fuel demand and alternative fuels, biofuels in particular,” E4tech reports. A tougher directive “would provide the necessary signal to encourage further road transport emissions reductions beyond efficiency gains and maintain biofuels as an option for deep decarbonization in the period to 2050.”
