This summer, a record 9 million hectares of forest in Alaska and Canada have burnt. Scientists at the Northeast Science Station, near Cherskiy, Russia hypothesize that Arctic fires may be creating new methane sources that could be the “fuse on the Arctic carbon bomb.” According to New Scientist, there is no question that warmer temperatures, drier conditions, and an uptick in lightning are catalysing a rise in fires.
