Chinese multinational wind manufacturer Goldwind Science & Technology hit a new milestone last week when it installed a gigantic, 16-megawatt offshore turbine in just 24 hours.

With what one Canadian climate analyst called a “small modular power plant”, Goldwind “has set a new record for the fastest installation of ultra-large-capacity #offshore units,” the company bragged on LinkedIn. “Using strategies that pre-emptively optimized processes through stimulations, the feat not only significantly reduced construction costs but also served as a vital breakthrough for scaling up offshore wind potential in future projects.”

The company doesn’t specify whether the turbine is located at the Zhangpu Liuao Phase 2 offshore wind farm in the southeastern Fujian Province, where another 16-MW wind machine set a new world record in September, generating 384.1 megawatt-hours of electricity in 24 hours in the midst of a typhoon, Electrek reports. That was enough power to supply 170,000 homes.

Goldwind’s GWH252-16MW offshore wind turbine stands 146 metres high, Electrek says, the height of a 50-storey building. With a rotor diameter of 252 metres, it covers a swept area of about 50,000 square metres.
