Only 29% of British Columbia residents support immediate construction of the controversial Northern Gateway pipeline, according to the latest Bloomberg-Nanos survey, while two-thirds want the project scrapped (34%) or delayed for further review (33%). “The most frequent association with the project was the belief that someday the pipeline might lead to an oil spill, followed by the job creation aspect of the proposed pipeline,” Nanos reports. Voters identified environmental and Aboriginal groups as the most credible voices on the pipeline, at 75% and 71%, with Enbridge and the Harper government least credible at 49% and 46%. In a follow-up report, Nanos determined that approval of Northern Gateway would have “a collateral negative impact” on Harper’s electoral support in B.C., especially among women.
