“Houston, you have a problem,” declares Alberta Oil Magazine, in a report on an energy literacy survey that points to mounting public opposition to oil and gas pipelines and hydraulic fracturing and a public opinion split on carbon pricing.
Concern about oil and gas development is “not just for West Coast hippies anymore,” the publication states. “In Canada, opposition to energy projects is cropping up in some pretty surprising places.”
The survey points to only lukewarm support for Kinder Morgan’s proposed Trans Mountain pipeline, concocting a “silent almost-majority” by combining poll respondents who don’t know how they feel about the project or “neither agree nor disagree”.
On the controversial Northern Gateway pipeline, the magazine sees opposition in British Columbia as “understandable. But the reluctance on the part of young and educated Canadians from coast to coast to support the two projects is more significant.” (h/t to The Tyee for first pointing us to this story)
