New Brunswick Power is in a difficult situation with the deteriorating Mactaquac dam. The potential effects of the dam range from changing watershed views, property values, the increased risk of ice-jam flooding down the river, and the decrease in wastewater outfalls to outlying First Nations lands and parks. The Crown utility must rebuild, refurbish, or remove the dam by 2030, which is anticipated to cost between CAD$2 billion and CAD$5 billion, says CBC News.
