The winner of this year’s Governor General’s Literary Award for French-language non-fiction donated $25,000 in prize money to the campaign against the Energy East pipeline this week, triggering another $143,000 in public contributions.
“We are in a serious situation now in Quebec,” former student leader Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois told CBC. “We have a very, very important choice to make around that very controversial Energy East TransCanada pipeline.” When he announced his donation on the popular Radio-Canada show Tout le monde en parle, the public response began pouring in.

Nadeau-Dubois won the literary award for Tenir Tête, his account of Quebec’s mass student strike in 2012.
