More than 20% of Canadians say the return of the federal consumer rebate for electric vehicles and spiking gas prices have made the idea of purchasing an EV more attractive, a new Abacus Data poll commissioned by Clean Energy Canada found.

The 2,000 Canadians who participated in the survey, which ran through the third week of April, were asked if “recent developments”—namely, soaring gas prices and the return of the $5,000 federal EV rebate—were making them generally “more inclined” to purchase an EV, either new or used.

One in five of those polled (21%) said such developments have, indeed, left them feeling more “open” to the idea of buying an electric vehicle, Clean Energy Canada reports in a release.

A further 31% said they were open to the idea—as much as they had been before the return of the EV rebates and the spike in gas prices courtesy of the U.S./Israeli war on Iran.

In total, 52% of Canadians were inclined towards an EV purchase at some point. About 45% said their next car would probably be electric, with 8% were certain, with 18% “very likely” and 22% “inclined”. Abacus said that data point was unchanged from a year ago.

Canadians particularly open to becoming EV owners at some point included those aged 18 to 29 (76%), British Columbians (62%), people with household incomes over $100,000 (65%), and respondents who voted NDP (64%) or Liberal (63%).

Some 40% of Canadians said neither the return of the consumer rebate nor gas pump prices had made them any more inclined to consider an EV. That included 45% of people with household incomes of less than $50,000, 54% of respondents aged 60 and over, compared to 19% in the 18-29 age bracket, and 52% of committed Conservative voters.
