Hawaii opened the first grid-connected ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) power plant. Duke Hartman, VP of business development for Makai Ocean Engineering, believes large-scale OTEC would be commercially viable and produce a baseload, cost-competitive electrical power source in Hawaii and other countries where imported fossil fuels are used to produce electricity.
