Graphene, deemed the “nanomaterial of the new millennium” by CleanTechnica, could help lower the cost of renewable hydrogen fuel for electric vehicles. Ironically, the creation of this new graphene-enabled catalyst comes out of oil-rich Texas, in a collaboration between Rice University, the University of Texas, and University of Houston. Previously the base of the catalyst for hydrogen was platinum, which is sustainable but costly. This new catalyst is a blend of cobalt and graphene, as the study says the key to sustainable hydrogen economy is the use of low cost, earth-abundant materials like cobalt as catalysts for water-splitting.
