First Energy, a utility company based in Ohio, owns both the power plants and transmission lines throughout the Northeast and Midwest U.S. Most recently, First Energy’s old power plants are losing money and they are asking customers to pay their US$3 billion bailout. In the past they have tried to block competitors from paying people to conserve energy, and last year pushed Ohio to become the first state to remove its successful clean energy standards by arguing it would increase electricity rates.
