Europe Plans 64GW of New Grid Capacity in 7 Years

The European Commission is planning to overhaul its 40-year-old power grid ahead of an expected 60% increase in electricity demand by 2030.

The commission is looking to spend €584-billion to double transborder connections among member states over the next seven years, Reuters reported in late November. The 27-member bloc will add 23 gigawatts of transmission by 2025 and 64 GW by 2030, on top of the 93 GW already in place.

“Electrification of transport along with the hooking up of new offshore wind farms and solar plants are among the myriad of projects planned for coming years to connect to the bloc’s power market,” the news agency writes, citing a dozen offshore projects in the North Sea, the Baltic Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean.

“Having the right infrastructure in place is the last piece of the puzzle,” said European Union energy commissioner Kadri Simson of Estonia. With a history of some projects taking a decade to complete, she added, “somebody needs to build these things that we keep talking about and bring these stakeholders together.”

Leonhard Birnbaum, president of the Eurelectric power sector lobby, called the plan an “excellent first step” but saw room for improvement. “Europe’s grids face an escalating number of threats from more frequent extreme weather events,” he said in a statement, so the EC “should therefore acknowledge the need for more climate adaptation.”
