A group of 160 award-winning environmental organizations from 46 countries will approach individual charitable foundations and philanthropists to divest from fossil fuel companies, invest in clean energy alternatives, and make grants to support the emerging clean-energy economy. “The world’s philanthropic foundations, given the scale of their endowments, hold the power to trigger a survival reflex in society, so greatly helping those negotiating the climate treaty,” states the Environmental Laureates’ Declaration on Climate Change, published September 15 in advance of the United Nations climate summit in New York. “The world’s philanthropic foundations fund work which improves the lives of millions of people around the world, but if they want that work to last they can’t afford to ignore climate change,” said green energy entrepreneur Jeremy Leggett, chair of SolarAid and the Carbon Tracker Initiative. “Investing in a clean energy future is the best way to safeguard their work and their finances.” (h/t to Politico Morning Energy for pointing us to this story)
