Denmark passed a law last week that will allow it to ban the controversial Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline from passing through its territorial waters based on security or foreign policy concerns.
“The measure amends Denmark’s regulatory framework to allow the authorities to cite security or foreign policy as reasons to block a pipeline,” Reuters reports. The project, proposed by Russia’s Gazprom and supported by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, would route natural gas via the Baltic Sea and bypass existing land routes through Ukraine, Poland, and Belarus.

“The proposed route goes through Danish waters,” the news agency notes, “but the pipeline consortium is investigating an alternative route north of the Danish island Bornholm which would run in international waters and therefore not be impacted by a potential Danish ban.”
