UK climate science publication Carbon Brief took home top honours in the Energy Commodities category and was short-listed among science and health publications when the British Journalism Awards announced their first-ever prizes for specialist media in mid-September.
“Carbon Brief is a site which uses the latest data and visualization methods to bring important public interest stories to light and tell them to a new audience,” the judges said in the award citation.

“Huge team effort,” tweeted Editor Leo Hickman. “So proud of my amazing colleagues.”
The BJA introduced the specialist media awards this year “to recognize great journalism being carried out on specialist and B2B titles and by specialist journalists working in the mainstream media,” Press Gazette reports.
“Like local newspapers, specialist titles are where the news is made,” said Press Gazette Editor Dominic Ponsford. “They are where much of the original reporting goes on that uncovers stories and adds to the sum total of human knowledge. A noble journalistic mission if ever there was one.”
