BASF has formed a joint venture with Netherlands-based Avantium to produce plastics from plant-based chemicals.
“The products will use fructose from plants as feedstock rather than conventional oil derivatives to make a new chemical building block, furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA),” Reuters reports. “They will be used in bottles for carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks, dairy products, as well as personal and home care products.”

Customers for the multi-hundred-million-Euro venture will include Coca-Cola, Danone, and Mitsui, according to an Avantium spokesperson.
The joint venture firm, Synvina, will produce 50,000 metric tons of material per year at BASF’s Antwerp, Belgium facility.
