British Columbia is intervening in two separate court cases launched by Saskatchewan and Ontario, both aiming to undercut federal authority to establish a floor price on carbon pollution.
The Saskatchewan case is due to be heard in February, while Ontario’s is scheduled for April, The Canadian Press reports.
B.C. Attorney General David Eby says the province intends to argue federal and provincial governments share a role in addressing climate change, but the federal government has the right and responsibility to put a price on carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere,” CP states. B.C. Environment Minister George Heyman touted his province’s decade-old carbon tax, but “believes the provinces should follow the national climate strategy”.
