350.org is out with an exquisite narrative poem—and a brilliant video—capturing a moment that has stopped the world in its tracks. Retired schoolteacher Kitty O’Meara of Madison, Wisconsin wrote the poem last week, and 350’s video circulated yesterday.
“Humanity is in shock, but people everywhere are standing in solidarity and supporting each other in beautiful and creative ways,” 350 writes in its introduction to the 1½-minute production. “Let’s stand in solidarity with the people on the front lines and show our support to those who are in need in these times of uncertainty.” “We also are hopeful that in the times ahead, we can move beyond extractive, dangerous economies and build a just, sustainable world.”

And the people stayed home.
And read books,
And listened,
And rested,
And exercised,
And made art,
And played games,
And learned new ways of being,
And were still.
And listened more deeply.
Some meditated,
Some prayed,
Some danced,
Some met their shadows.
And the people began to think differently.
And the people healed.
And in the absence of people living in ignorant, dangerous, mindless, and heartless ways,
The Earth began to heal.
And when the danger passed,
And the people joined together again,
They grieved their losses,
And made new choices,
And dreamed new images,
And created new ways to live and heal the Earth fully,
As they had been healed.
