A U.S. group is looking for research participants to help it build an online database on the day-to-day details of electric vehicle ownership.
The EV Watts Data Dashboard is meant to address the “growing need for practical information about vehicle electrification,” writes Maryland-based Energetics Clean Energy Consulting. Researchers are gathering, then validating and summarizing “real-world use data” from plug-in electric vehicles and charging stations to help inform future research, development, and deployment.

The electrification of the U.S. transportation system and the rapid rise of EVs has outpaced the availability of data to track the trend, Energetics says. The new data will focus on charging and driving patterns, as well as vehicle and charger performance, to help consumers, automakers, and charging station operators make better decisions.
“EV WATTS will facilitate unbiased analyses, drawing on diverse data that provides robust results from a broad stakeholder group,” Joann Zhou, mobility and deployment group leader at the U.S. Argonne National Laboratory, said in a release. The availability of “uniform, comprehensive, and anonymized dataset from recent PEV and EVSE deployments” will shed light on charging behaviour by vehicle class and trip purpose and “on the correlation between [charging station] availability and [EV] adoption, laying the foundation for better future placements of infrastructure.”
Energetics says the research is homing in on all-electric and plug-in hybrid EVs and fast-charging infrastructure across a variety of geographies, climates, vehicle types, and types of charging sites.
