25,000-Strong Children’s Choir to Sing (Virtual) Plea for G7 Climate Action

The voices of 25,000 children from 27 countries will soon be raised in unison as the Truro Cathedral’s children’s choir orchestrates a poignant plea for the G7 to do more to tackle the climate crisis.

Premier Christian News writes that the choir initiative, called Sing2G7, will deliver a specially composed “message of hope” by Zoom on June 9. And they’ve issued an invitation to the world leaders who will be attending the UK-hosted G7 summit next week in Cornwall.

Sing2G7 co-founder Esme Page told Premier that she and Truro Cathedral Choir director Christopher Gray hatched the idea back in January when they were discussing ways to get the attention of those who have the power to tackle the climate crisis. “We got together and were thinking, how is this relevant to our children, it’s going to be happening just around the corner. They have so much to say to power, but how do they get to actually reach them?”

In addition to being a plea for climate action, the song project supports UNICEF’s Give the World a Shot campaign for global vaccination.

Composed by Sir Tim Rice, a patron of Truro Cathedral, and composer Peter Hobbs, the song melds whimsy and sweet praise with a surprisingly edgy directive and particularly poignant force:

Gee 7, let nations speak to nation

Gee 7, don’t let the others down

Gee 7, don’t forget, they’re not so fortunate

Or we’ll run you out of town
