
Six months after the World Trade Organization sided with the United States in a challenge to local procurement provisions in India’s widely-admired National Solar Mission, India struck back, accusing the United States of doing precisely the same thing.
In its complaint, revealed by the WTO on Monday, India alleges that “the states of Washington, California, Montana, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Michigan, Delaware, and Minnesota prop up their renewables sector with illegal subsidies and domestic content requirements,” Reuters reports.

Back in February, the office of the U.S. Trade Representative “called the ruling [against India] a significant victory,” Reuters reported at the time. India has appealed the WTO decision, even as it proceeds with its counter-action.
