Chalk up another award nomination for the investigative team at InsideClimate News.
ICN’s exposé on Exxon’s early climate change research, The Road Not Taken, has been named as a finalist for the prestigious Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting.
The eight-month investigation revealed that top Exxon executives understood the dangers of climate change and its implications for the fossil fuel business in the mid-1970s, but chose to lavish funds on climate denial rather than contributing to climate solutions.
The ICN team behind the investigation was led by Neela Banerjee, Lisa Song, David Hasemyer, and John H. Cushman Jr.
“Many of this year’s submissions were prizeworthy, and the top six—the judges’ picks as finalists for the Goldsmith Prize—are spectacular,” said Thomas Patterson, interim director of the Shorenstein Center, which administers the Goldsmith. “They testify, at a time when newsrooms are shrinking, to journalists’ commitment to exposing wrongdoing by those entrusted with power.”
