Donald Trump would reject the Keystone XL pipeline if he succeeded in his quest to become United States president, unless TransCanada Corporation gave the country a “big, big chunk of the profits, or even ownership rights,” the reality TV star and multi-millionaire told campaign rallies in Iowa over the weekend.
“I want 25% of the deal for the United States. They’re going to make a fortune,” Trump said Sunday. The previous day, he told Iowa caucus voters he would insist on “25% of the profits forever,” adding that TransCanada shouldn’t be permitted to push Canadian oil “through farmland and through cities and wherever the hell they’re going” without sharing the proceeds.
“I like Canada, I want these people to be happy, but I want the developers of the pipeline to give the United States a big, big chunk of the profits or even ownership rights, like I do in business. That’s what I do,” Trump declared. “I want a big piece of the deal. Otherwise I’m not going to approve it. They will give us a lot.”
