Intermittent generation was long regarded as the Achilles heel of some renewable technologies. But a boom in energy storage is helping to balance out the supply-demand hiccups, Greentech Media reports in its proprietary U.S. Energy Storage Monitor.
Greentech estimates that energy storage deployments will approach 300 MW in 2015, nearly triple the rate of rollout in 2014. The great majority of installations were at utility scale, its release indicated, as residential installations fell—Elon Musk’s novel Powerwall, introduced earlier this year, notwithstanding.
By 2019 however, Greentech sees residential energy storage rebounding to rates of deployment greater than the entire sector experienced last year. It forecasts total new capacity installed in that year to be about 850 MW.
