A study published in the Journal of Glaciology found that in Antarctica, the amount of snow gained was greater than the amount of ice lost to melting in some areas. The author of the paper, Jay Zwally, scientist at NASA, said this study does not fuel climate denial: “Climate warming is taking place in the Antarctic, but to a lesser extent than it is in the Arctic or the rest of the world.” Zwally explains it’s affecting the Antarctic peninsula and the west of Antarctica, but the large interior is gaining mass. Zwally says the findings suggest that Antarctica is not adding to global sea level rise but perhaps it’s the ocean’s thermal expansion.
