The American Legislative Exchange Council, supported by the Koch Brothers, have launched an initiative to target incorrect information toward low-income families that could benefit from renewable energy. According to Resilience.com, the utility companies’ rationale is that as increasing numbers of people have “the financial ability to invest” in renewable energy, transmission lines will need to be paid for by lower-income households. This premise has consistently been disproven, however. EQUAT is a non-profit agency that’s been countering the initiative, with a plan to engage neighbours and unionized workers to increase Philadelphia’s solar production by installing solar panels in North Philadelphia.
