Solar energy-generating noise barriers are being tested along the Netherlands A2 highway. Michael Debije at the Eindhoven University of Technology developed the Luminescent Solar Concentrator (LSC) noise barriers, which offer “tremendous potential” and are “low cost, can be produced in any desired, regular color, robust and the LSCs will even work when the sky is cloudy.” Since April, the two test panels have been monitored and early findings indicate that 1 kilometre of energy-generating noise barriers can produce enough electricity to power 50 households.
