A group of innovative construction companies in the Netherlands are converting social housing into net-zero homes. The rental houses all have a similar layout, streamlining the construction process and enabling companies to design a kit of parts that pop easily into the existing properties with relatively little disruption to residents. Renters in the social housing projects are already paying a yearly utility bill of around US$2,200. The retrofits eliminate that bill, and by asking tenants to pay the social housing corporation the same amount, it pays for the construction costs.
