A recent proposal by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service aims to strengthen laws that will protect birds from oil and gas waste pits and flares that burn off unwanted gas from well sites. These oil and gas waste pits are filled with toxic chemicals used by drillers to frack wells in places like South Texas. Based on U.S. federal data, the Audubon Society estimates that between 500,000 and 1 million birds die trapped in waste pits each year.
