Rare Earths Not So Rare

The rare earths on which many clean energy technologies depend may not be as rare as they were once thought, according to a study by the Council on Foreign Relations. China’s restriction on rare earth exports threatened the economic competitiveness of hybrid and electric cars, wind turbines, and non-silicon solar cells, but that policy triggered a global, market-based response that undermined China’s near-monopoly.
