“And these are actions that would also deliver multiple economic benefits,” writes New Climate Economy Programme Director Helen Mountford.
“This year, the global community has an unprecedented opportunity,” she adds. “Momentum is already building—technological innovation, new economic trends and political commitments are all coming together—towards a low-carbon future. But the pace of change needs to be accelerated to stimulate further and better quality growth and reduce climate risks.”
The commission’s 10 recommendations include:
- Accelerated low-carbon development in the world’s cities
- Restoration and protection of agricultural and forest landscapes, and increased agricultural productivity
- At least US$1 trillion per year invested in clean technology
- Higher energy efficiency standards
- Effective carbon pricing
- Climate-smart infrastructure
- Low-carbon innovation
- Low-carbon growth through business and investor action
- Greater “ambition” to reduce aviation and maritime emissions
- Phasing down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).
