Mexico Scales Back Its 2018 Renewable Power Target

Mexico has reduced its renewable energy development target for 2018, just days after announcing an ambitious plan to produce 24% of its power from renewables by 2024 and cap its greenhouse gas emissions in 2026.

While a draft national energy plan set an 8.2% renewable electricity target for 2018, the final version cut that number to 5%, Cleantechnica reports. “This short-term plan certainly looks insufficient to take Mexico to its medium-term target,” Chadha notes. “Going from 5% in 2018 to 24% in 2024 will require quite a leap.”

Renewable energy represented 7% of Mexico’s energy supply in 2011, with biomass, hydropower, and geothermal leading the way.
