Solar Plane Sets New World Record

Solar Impulse 2 made aviation history this week by logging 1,468 kilometres (912 miles) in a single flight, the longest distance ever for a solar-powered aircraft.

“It is fantastic to arrive in #India powered by the sun!” tweeted pilot Bertrand Picard after departing Muscat, crossing the Arabian Sea, and landing at Ahmedabad. Solar Impulse 2 is still in the early stages of what organizers hope will be the first round-the-world solar flight.

“Welcome back on the ground Bertrand Picard! I could not be happier, you did an amazing flight!” tweeted Solar Impulse CEO and co-founder André Borschberg, who set the previous solar flight record of 1,385.5 kilometres (861 miles) in 2013
