A research effort by three European companies has set a new world record, delivering a multi-junction solar cell that converts 46% of incoming sunlight to electricity.
The cells would be used in concentrating photovoltaic solar installations, with Soitec, one of the three research partners, currently building a 44-megawatt CPV plant in South Africa.

Soitec is aiming for 50% cell efficiency in the near future, Renewable Energy World reports. “I have no doubt that this successful cooperation with our French and German partners will drive further increase of CPV technology efficiency and competitiveness,” said Jocelyne Wasselin, the company’s vice president of solar cell product development.
