80% of city council candidates who answered an Ecology Ottawa survey would support an independent environmental assessment of TransCanada’s Energy East pipeline, and 87% “would oppose the pipeline if it posed a threat to the health of Ottawa’s environment,” the local non-profit reported this week.
With municipal elections coming up October 27, Ecology Ottawa said 68% of registered candidates answered the survey. “For most candidates, public safety is a priority,” according to the release. “Several expressed doubts that a retrofit of a 55-year-old pipeline can handle 1.1 million barrels of crude oil per day without endangering Ottawa’s rivers and drinking water.”
