Although the European Union recently gave in to a “five-year siege by Canadian officials and industry lobbyists” on its Fuel Quality Directive, The Tyee reports that at least one European environment minister was less receptive to Canada’s lobby efforts.
“All the time Stephen Harper argued that non-conventional oil has the same emissions as conventional oil,” recalled former French environment minister Corinne Lepage. “I received the ambassador of Canada for this point, and my position was, ‘no.’” Lepage recalled that Quebec’s position on the Fuel Quality Directive was “very, very different” from Alberta’s.
