The Canadian and Quebec governments will table legislation this year to jointly develop an estimated 39 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 1.5 billion barrels of oil in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper made the announcement in Sept-Iles Tuesday with Quebec’s junior transport minister, Jean D’Amour, taking part in the media event.

In June, a coalition of environmental groups, First Nations, and fisheries representatives called for a moratorium on exploration in the Gulf, arguing that too little is known about the effects on the region’s fragile ecosystem.
