A new interactive mapping tool from the World Resources Institute uses geospatial analysis to assess risks to water supply in regions with active shale gas development. The tool, released September 12, is the first to cross-reference fresh water availability against shale gas resources.
“The report does help identify priority locations worldwide where freshwater management will be most critical if shale resources are developed,” Dodge writes. It also points to “potential business risks associated with freshwater availability to companies, and builds the case for corporate water stewardship and early source-water assessment.”
