Federal Report Shows Climate Change Impacts on Canada’s Forests

October 3, 2014
Reading time: 1 minute

Canada’s managed forests were a net carbon source in 2012, not a carbon sink, and the climate of the country’s northern boreal forests “is changing faster than the global average,” according to a report released earlier this week by Natural Resources Minister Greg Rickford.

The report “contained the most detailed data yet on climate change and the effects of extreme weather and regional temperature shifts on forests,” but “went by with little notice, tabled as it was in the late afternoon after members of the Parliamentary Press Gallery had filed outside the House,” Naumetz reports. It indicated that “forest operations are already being impacted by changes in climate,” resulting in earlier starts to the forest fire season, shorter seasons for winter harvesting and transport, and higher management costs.
