80% of Toronto Homebuyers Prefer ‘Walkable, Transit-Friendly Neighbourhoods’

More than 80% of Greater Toronto Area homebuyers “prefer walkable, transit-friendly neighbourhoods to car-dependent locations, even if it means trading a large house and yard for a modest house, townhouse, or condo,” report the Pembina Institute and the Royal Bank of Canada, based on a May 2014 Environics survey. Even among families with three or more children, 60% “would trade off a larger house in a car-dependent location for walkability, rapid transit, and a smaller home.” The report, a repeat of a 2012 survey, “also explores the importance of home prices and transportation costs when making home location choices,” Burda writes.
