Global Alliance Promotes Climate-Smart Agriculture

More than 20 governments and 30 organizations and companies are joining a global alliance to protect 500 million farmers from climate change and promote food security for the nine billion people expected to inhabit the Earth in 2050. The countries joining the Global Alliance for Climate-Smart Agriculture “represent millions of farmers, at least a quarter of the world’s cereal production, 43 million undernourished people, and 16% of total agricultural greenhouse gas emissions,” the UN reported September 23, during its global climate summit in New York. The alliance will set out to achieve “sustainable and equitable increases in agricultural productivity and incomes; greater resilience of food systems and farming livelihoods; and reduction and/or removal of greenhouse gas emissions associated with agriculture.”
