Nest Labs has begun giving its thermostat away to selected Airbnb hosts, a deal that Lacey calls a shrewd move for both companies. “From Airbnb’s perspective, giving away free Nest thermostats is a good way to frame the company’s new eco-friendly branding,” after a Cleantech Group study found that Airbnb’s North American users consume 63% less energy than guests in standard hotels. And Nest “has landed a very important deal that has much more value than helping people save a bit of money on their energy bills.”
