Bicyclists Must Feel Safe on the Road, Says Transportation Secretary Foxx

August 14, 2014
Reading time: 1 minute

It won’t be easy to fund bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure in the United States, but Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said it’s essential to help bicyclists feel safe on the road. “When you have 100 million more people to move around over the next 35 years, we’re going to see more congestion,” Foxx told the National Press Club in late July, and the Department of Transportation “can facilitate a role. We want to ensure bicyclists are as safe as pedestrians and drivers.” Mobility Lab noted that the proposed Grow America Act “doesn’t set aside TIFIA [Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act] loan money for bike and pedestrian programs in low-income communities, where Latinos and African-Americans are disproportionately killed on bicycles.”
