After experiencing 189 severe smog days last year and serious health effects as a result, Beijing announced that is closing coal facilities in six of its capital districts. But the Minerals Council of Australia predicted that coal exports to China will actually grow, with production shifting to electricity generation. “It reflects Chinese policy to replace existing coal-fired plants with new, larger, more efficient coal-fired plants in provinces further west,” the Council said in a statement.
