Tar Sands/Oil Sands ‘More Economically Marginal’ Than Analysts Believed

The Natural Resources Defense Council is tracking a series of industry announcements that are “pouring cold water on the argument that tar sands development will happen at the same pace and scale, with or without major infrastructure projects like Keystone XL,” Swift reports. The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers has “substantially reduced” its predictions for tar sands/oil sands expansion, and two projects in Alberta have been cancelled. “New tar sands projects have already proven far more economically marginal than the State Department assumed in its environmental review of Keystone XL,” Swift writes, and “the tar sands industry doesn’t expect the problem of growing costs to go away anytime soon.” (h/t to our subscriber Diane Beckett for spotting this story)
