UN Report Calls for ‘Deep Decarbonization’ by Mid-Century

A report to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is calling for “deep decarbonization” by mid-century to keep average global warming to 2ºC. The target would mean reducing global carbon dioxide emissions to 11 gigatons per year, compared to 36 gigatons today. “This will require a profound transformation of energy systems by mid-century through steep declines in carbon intensity in all sectors of the economy,” noted the report’s authors, the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations and the Earth Institute at Columbia University.
