Self-driving freight vehicles could find their way onto Germany’s autobahns by 2025, Daimler suggested last week, based on its tests of a Highway Pilot system that allows the human driver to switch control to the truck. The system combines vehicle-to-vehicle communication, front and lateral radar, and a front camera mounted below the windshield. “The Future Truck 2025 is our response to the major challenges and opportunities associated with road freight transport in the future,” said Daimler management board member Dr. Wolfgang Bernhard.
